Security

Carbon Black

March 1, 2021 through the end of April 2021 - we are moving campus owned computers into high-enforcement.

  • What is Carbon Black? It is software that allows the installation of any known good software, and blocks anything unknown or malicious from running, providing improved security for our campus computers and data.
  • What does high-enforcement mean? It means that Carbon Black will prevent installations of non-recognized software, although, if it's something you still need, you can ask for approval for installation.
  • Our job is to keep campus owned computers and data safe while allowing everyone access to what they need to do their jobs.

Remote Computing Security

Like other institutions, we are seeing an increased volume of attacks on our campus systems and accounts as we move to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every employee is responsible for protecting our campus and student data.  We are reminding everyone to use extra caution with data and access to data, and adhere to the following wherever possible:
  • Do not download or email campus data, but rather store and share via the campus DFS or OneDrive.
  • Do not save any campus data on non-campus systems, like your personal computer, Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, etc. We have no control over these systems. Use OneDrive instead.
  • Do not auto-forward your email to an external (non-Butte) account.
  • Enroll in PortalGuard to ensure you can change your password or unlock your account without User Support Services assistance.
  • Do not give any sensitive or protected information to any users, especially external, unless you are absolutely sure of their legitimacy. Pick up the phone and call to verify.
  • Do not click on any links within email unless you are absolutely sure it is safe.
    • this is the primary method for gaining access to our systems. Pick up the phone and call to verify.
  • Do not fill out any requests for your account information “verification”—ITSS will never ask for this information, nor will any legitimate institution--you should protect your username and password at all costs.
  • Only employees that require VPN access to Colleague, Report Server, ImageNow, and SARS will be given access.
  • Cloud based systems do not require VPN to access them from home, such as Canvas, Microsoft Outlook, and OneDrive.
  • Personal device security:
    • The user must ensure the security of their personal computer system: operating system patches are up to date, virus checker is up to date, and other household members are restricted from use when using the VPN.
    • ITSS does not provide assistance with home network or Wi-Fi issues or personal devices other than issues with passwords.
    • If the computer is a Butte decaled system, you can contact User Support Services for general or password assistance—we will not support your home network or wi-fi.
If for any reason you suspect that campus data might have been errantly sent to someone, or compromised by a phishing or hacking attempt, please contact User Support Services at usersupportservices@whbimu.com as soon as possible so we can provide assessment and assistance.
